A parliamentary panel has urged for increased representation of women and transgenders in the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) and has put forth suggestions to achieve this goal. The committee, led by BJP MP Sushil Kumar Modi, emphasized that the current representation of women in CAPFs is only at 3.76%. To address this, the committee proposed exploring a policy that offers softer postings for women officers, especially considering the challenging terrains and conditions they might encounter. The report also recommended providing reservation for transgenders in the forces.

The committee stressed the urgent need to fill the existing vacancies across CAPFs and Assam Rifles and suggested a targeted recruitment drive for local youths from border districts. It further highlighted the importance of transparently monitoring retirements, vacancies, and appointments to ensure timely and efficient staffing. The committee called for a systematic mechanism where all departments promptly communicate vacancy details to the Home Ministry to avoid unnecessary delays in appointments.

The report underscored the need for a concerted effort to enhance the participation of women and transgenders in the security forces, aiming to create a more inclusive and diverse workforce. The panel’s recommendations seek to address the challenges faced by women and transgenders while ensuring that the forces represent a wider spectrum of society. By encouraging participation and offering policy-based support, the committee aims to pave the way for a more equitable and effective security establishment.
