UK First Lady Akshata Murty expressed her pride as her mother, Sudha Murty, was awarded the Padma Bhushan award for her contributions in social work. Sudha Murty’s journey from STEM to storytelling was extraordinary, but her charitable and volunteering efforts became her daughter’s greatest inspiration. Akshata Murty highlighted the many ways her mother has helped the less privileged, founding and running philanthropic organisations, funding literacy initiatives and ensuring timely aid to people in remote corners of India after natural disasters.

Sudha Murty’s philanthropic efforts have been wide-ranging, having served as the chairperson of the Infosys Foundation for more than two decades. She received India’s highest civilian award, the Padma Bhushan, from President Droupadi Murmu in recognition of her contributions. During the ceremony, Sudha Murty was accompanied by her husband, Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy, children Akshata and Rohan, and sister Sunanda Kulkarni.

In her Instagram post, Akshata Murty expressed that her mother does not seek recognition for her efforts. However, it is a matter of great happiness and pride for her family to see her efforts being recognized. The values of hard work, humility, and selflessness that her parents instilled in her and her brother are reflected in the way she lives her life.

As the daughter of Sudha Murty, Akshata Murty hopes to carry on her mother’s legacy of philanthropy and volunteerism. She wrote that her mother’s example has put volunteering, learning, and listening at the heart of how she hopes to live in 10, Downing Street, where her husband serves as the UK Prime Minister.

Sudha Murty’s recognition with the Padma Bhushan award is not only a moment of pride for her family but also a source of inspiration for many women who aspire to make a difference in their communities through philanthropy and volunteerism.
