Philanthropist Susmita Bagchi: A Woman of Many Talents

According to the India Philanthropy Report 2022, just under 1% of India’s billionaires and ultra-wealthy donate their wealth to charitable causes. In this context, Susmita and her husband, Subroto Bagchi of Mindtree made the news with an annual donation of Rs. 213 crores, placing fifth in the list of India’s top philanthropists. Susmita Bagchi, a co-founder of Mindtree, is also a talented writer and social reformer.

She has authored a travelogue, several collections of short stories, and five novels in both English and Odia. Her work has won several prestigious awards, including the State Sahitya Academy Award in 1993. Her debut English novel, Children of a Better God deals with the theme of mental health and has been praised for its accessibility and reliability.

In addition to her literary achievements, Susmita Bagchi is also the creator of Sucharita, a monthly women’s publication that showcases her writing. Through her philanthropic efforts, she and her husband are working to advance the healthcare profession in India. Despite the challenges of encouraging philanthropy among India’s wealthiest citizens, Susmita Bagchi’s dedication to social causes and her success as a writer and entrepreneur serves as an inspiration to women everywhere.
