Indian badminton player PV Sindhu suffered a heavy defeat at the Madrid Spain Masters Super 300 tournament. The two-time Olympic medallist was completely outplayed by Indonesia’s Gregoria Mariska Tunjung in the women’s singles final, losing 8-21, 8-21. Despite having a 7-0 advantage over Tunjung in previous encounters, Sindhu looked clueless and unable to match her opponent’s tactical acumen and sharpness.
The loss is a blow for Sindhu, who had shown flashes of brilliance during the tournament leading up to the final. However, Tunjung’s deceptive strokes and ability to produce winners proved too much for the former world champion. The defeat means Sindhu has not won a title in eight months, with her last victory coming at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham in August 2022.
While the loss is disappointing, it will give Sindhu some confidence heading into a crucial year that sees the start of the Paris Olympic qualification process next month. The 27-year-old from Hyderabad is currently training under Vidhi Chaudhary following the exit of Korea’s Park Tae Sang.
