Indian badminton player PV Sindhu started her campaign at the Badminton Asia Championships on a high note. She won her women’s singles first-round match against Wen Chi Hsu of Taiwan in straight games, breaking the deadlock at 14-14 and winning 21-15 in the first game. Though Wen gave a better challenge in the second game, Sindhu held her nerves and won the match, advancing to the second round of the competition.
Ranked 8th, Sindhu will now face Han Yue of China, who is ranked 9th in the world. Meanwhile, Kidambi Srikanth also eased into the second round of the men’s singles after beating Adnan Ebrahim of Bahrain.
Other Indian players faced mixed fortunes in the competition. Lakshya Sen lost to Loh Kean Yew of Singapore, while Malavika Bansod lost to World No.1 Akane Yamaguchi. On the other hand, doubles pairing of Gayatri Gopichand and Jolly Treesa won their opening-round match against Indonesia’s Lanny Tira Mayasari and Ribka Sugiarto after bouncing back from behind.
