Rashmi Shukla Maharashtra DGP Role, Pledges on safety of crime against women
Rashmi Shukla: Maharashtra’s First Female DGP
Rashmi Shukla, a seasoned IPS officer of the 1988 batch, has taken charge as Maharashtra’s Director General of Police (DGP), making history as the first woman to hold this prestigious position in the state.
Prioritizing Women’s Safety and Cyber Crime
During a press conference following her official induction, Shukla outlined her key priorities. Emphasizing a commitment to ensuring the safety of women, she asserted that combating cybercrime would be at the forefront of her agenda. In addition, she identified narcotics as a significant menace requiring attention.
Inclusivity and Law Enforcement
Shukla expressed her dedication to upholding the principles of justice and inclusivity. She affirmed that every woman should feel secure on the streets, emphasizing that injustice would not be tolerated. Addressing concerns about the upcoming gathering of Maratha quota activists in Mumbai on January 20, she assured a strategic approach after consulting with senior police officers.
Rule of Law Prevails: No One Above It
Responding to questions regarding the investigation into a rape case involving industrialist Sajjan Jindal, Shukla firmly stated that nobody is above the law. This underscored her commitment to upholding justice and maintaining law and order in the state.
Tackling Menace of Narcotics
Recognizing the gravity of the narcotics issue, Shukla announced regular police department meetings to address and combat the menace effectively. Additionally, she highlighted the importance of raising awareness about highway accidents among the public.
Welfare Measures for Police Constables
Ensuring the well-being of police constables emerged as another focus area for Shukla. She pledged efforts to enhance their welfare and professional conditions, acknowledging their crucial role in maintaining law and order.
Controversy and Legal Clearance
Shukla, previously embroiled in controversy during the Maha Vikas Aghadi government’s tenure, successfully navigated legal challenges. The Bombay High Court in September 2023 quashed two FIRs related to phone tapping cases, where she was accused of illegally intercepting the phones of opposition leaders during Devendra Fadnavis’s tenure as chief minister.
Seamless Transition: Shukla Succeeds Seth as DGP
Following the retirement of Rajnish Seth on December 31, 2023, Shukla assumed the role of DGP, succeeding him seamlessly. Previously, Mumbai Police Commissioner Vivek Phansalkar held the additional charge until Shukla’s official appointment.
Rashmi Shukla’s leadership marks a new era for law enforcement in Maharashtra, with a strong focus on women’s safety, cybercrime prevention, and ensuring justice for all.
