Relief for Medical Students as Centre Allows Completion of MBBS Course from Abroad
In a much-awaited relief to medical students affected by the pandemic and the Ukraine-Russia war, the Indian Centre has announced a one-time measure that allows students in their penultimate year to clear their MBBS final exam without enrolling in medical colleges in India.
This decision was conveyed by Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati to the Supreme Court bench of Justices B R Gavai and Vikram Nath. The Centre’s decision came in response to the court’s appeal to frame a policy that would enable these students to complete their course and pursue their profession after qualifying. The court had emphasized that the student’s education should not go to waste, and they should not be left in the lurch.
The affidavit filed by the Centre stated that the students would have to pass both theory and practical exams as per the existing syllabus. After clearing these two exams, they would need to complete two years of compulsory rotatory internship.
The court had stressed that this issue was a humanitarian problem and requested the Centre and the National Medical Commission to find a solution that would enable students who had completed the course to get clinical training in India and be eligible to practice medicine. If no solution was found, the students’ careers would be affected, and their families would suffer.
This decision is a positive step towards supporting the aspirations of medical students who had to return to India due to unforeseen circumstances. It will provide them with an opportunity to complete their education and achieve their goals while safeguarding their interests and those of their families.
