Chandrika’s daily journey begins at 7 am in Kattankulathur, shuttling students to school and passengers across Chennai. From Tambaram’s Ramakrishna high school to LIC, she adeptly navigates the city’s roads. Fulfilling her aspiration of becoming a driver in 2005, she acquired her license and later purchased her autorickshaw in 2020 amidst family financial struggles. Her journey took an unexpected turn when she connected with a network of women drivers who are rewriting the norms of the profession.

Starting five years ago with just 50 members in Nanganallur, this unique community now spans several districts in Tamil Nadu, boasting a strong presence with hundreds of members in both Chennai and Coimbatore. The shared goal among these women is to challenge gender norms and stereotypes in a field traditionally dominated by men.

Empowered by recent government schemes, which provide financial aid to women wanting to own autos, these women have managed to overcome challenges that used to hinder their progress. Mohana, an organizer among these women, emphasizes the paradigm shift, noting that women can now drive various routes, a privilege previously limited to their male counterparts.

Despite societal biases and preconceptions, Chandrika and her fellow women auto drivers press on with unwavering determination. They believe in prioritizing passengers’ safety and offering a reliable service. Each ride they undertake serves as a testament to their resilience and the progress they are championing.

As these women carve their paths through the bustling streets of Chennai, they are not just drivers; they are agents of change. Breaking down barriers and inspiring future generations, these women auto drivers redefine success on their terms.
