Responsible use of AI can create enormous opportunity, prosperity: India at UN

India’s Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Ruchira Kamboj highlighted the enormous prosperity and opportunity that can be generated by Artificial Intelligence (AI) if it is harnessed correctly.

Kamboj emphasized the importance of ensuring AI systems are not misused and that the advancement of digital superintelligence is symbiotic with humanity. Speaking at a special event ‘Artificial Intelligence for Social Justice’, Kamboj underlined the potential for AI to lead to more productive and efficient economies.

The event was held on the occasion of the 132nd birth anniversary of Dr. B R Ambedkar and was hosted by the Permanent Mission of India to the UN in partnership with the Foundation for Human Horizon NGO at the UN headquarters. Kamboj also quoted Ambedkar’s views on equality and stressed the need for ensuring equal rights and opportunities for all.

UN Secretary-General’s Envoy on Technology Amandeep Singh Gill also stressed that the advance of AI must be symbiotic with humanity and must use unbiased data to build social justice. Kamboj highlighted India’s commitment to using AI for social empowerment in sectors such as agriculture, healthcare, and education. India’s government has created AI algorithms to forecast agricultural yields and is using AI for the diagnosis and treatment of ailments in India’s underserved regions. The Government has also started several programs to use AI to educate marginalized populations. Singapore’s Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Burhan Gafoor paid tribute to India’s leadership and accomplishments in the area of technology and AI.
