Selena Gomez Delights in Cannes Best Actress Win
Selena Gomez was thrilled to learn she won the Best Actress Award at the Cannes Film Festival for her role in “Emilia Pérez.” On May 25, Gomez, 31, got a call from her co-star Zoe Saldaña, who told her the exciting news. Gomez, Saldaña, Karla Sofia Gascón, and Adriana Paz all shared the award for their roles in the film.
Gomez was in Central Park, New York City, having a picnic with friends when she found out. Gascón accepted the award in France at the closing ceremony, where “Emilia Pérez” also won the Jury Prize. Gomez thanked the Cannes Film Festival on Instagram for the honor.
Greta Gerwig, the Cannes jury president, explained that they awarded all four actresses because their performances together made the film special. Jury member Lily Gladstone agreed, saying the actresses’ teamwork was outstanding.
“Emilia Pérez,” directed by Jacques Audiard, premiered at Cannes and received a nine-minute standing ovation. Gomez and her co-stars were moved to tears. Gomez expressed her gratitude to the director and her fellow actors on Instagram.
For Gomez, acting in Spanish was a big challenge. She told AP she wished she could have done better but was grateful for the experience. Saldaña praised Gomez’s efforts, saying she worked very hard and her emotions shone through despite the language barrier.
The shared award highlighted the strong collaboration and support among the cast, making their win even more special.
