Krishnaveni Government Girls Higher Secondary School in Namakkal district had an extra reason to celebrate when this year’s Class 12 examination results under the Tamil Nadu state board were announced on Monday. G Shreya, a transgender student of the school, scored 337 marks out of 600 in the Commerce stream, achieving a commendable pass percentage of 94%. Shreya is reportedly the only transgender candidate who appeared for the exam this year.

Teachers, non-teaching staff members, and the entire school management felicitated the 21-year-old, who urged the government to provide her with financial assistance so that she could achieve her dream of becoming a marine engineer. Shreya, raised by her mother Rajeshwari, a daily-wage laborer, wants to further the cause of education within the transgender community.

“I feel happy that my performance will add pride to my transgender community. My wish is that all transgenders should study and strive for education and not head into any other wrong path,” Shreya said while speaking to reporters. She thanked her headmistress and other teachers for their support, adding that her institution treated her like any other girl, which allowed her to focus on her studies.

R Saraswathi, Headmistress of the school, said that Shreya was expected to score even higher marks. “She works very hard. Shreya may have scored over 400 marks if she did not fall sick before the exam. Despite the ailment, she managed to secure good marks. Her achievement has brought more pride to our school and district,” she said.

Shreya’s success highlights the need for inclusive education and opportunities for the transgender community. With government support and access to quality education, members of this marginalized group can reach their full potential and contribute to society
