Sawe Triumphs in Thrilling TCS World 10K Run; Ethiopians Shine in Women’s Race
The anticipation was high as the 15th edition of the TCS World 10K run approached, with all eyes on defending champion Nicholas Kipkorir Kimeli of Kenya. However, his compatriot and close friend Sabastain Sawe posed a significant threat to his title defense. Sawe had recently defeated Kipkorir by a narrow margin to claim gold in the Adizero Road to Record 10K in Germany, setting the stage for an exciting rematch in Bengaluru.
In a photo finish that left a mere 11-hundredths of a second between the winner and the runner-up, Sawe emerged victorious once again, leaving Kipkorir out of the podium at fourth place. Sawe secured his third consecutive win this year, crossing the finish line in 27 minutes 58.24 seconds. Burundi’s Rodrigue Kwizera took the silver medal with a timing of 27:58.35, while Kenya’s Hillary Chepkwoni claimed bronze in his 10K debut with a time of 27:59.70.
Reflecting on his victory, Sawe expressed his surprise at his own energy in the final stretch and credited his determination for the win. Although Kipkorir missed out on a podium finish, he can take solace in the fact that his course record of 27.38 seconds remained unbroken.
In the elite women’s race, Ethiopians showcased their dominance, securing the top three positions. Tsehay Gemechu led from start to finish, claiming gold in 31.38 seconds. Fotyen Tesfaye (31.42s) and Dera Dida (31.45s) earned the silver and bronze medals, respectively. Gemechu’s victory was a redemption after a setback in 2019 when she mistook the finish line and finished sixth. This time, she displayed confidence and determination, stating that she came to win and expressing her joy at the achievement.
In the Indian category, Murli Gavit emerged as the men’s champion with a time of 29:58.03. Harmanjot Singh secured the silver medal (29:59.10), and Uttam Chand claimed bronze (29:59.24). Among the Indian women, first-time participant Tamshi Singh secured a comfortable lead, achieving a personal best of 34.12 seconds for a well-deserved victory. Poonam Sonune took the silver medal (34:29), followed by Seema in third place (34:30).
The TCS World 10K run delivered thrilling performances and showcased the remarkable achievements of both international and Indian athletes, exemplifying the spirit of competition and determination.
