The Nourishment of Hobbies
Fueling the Mind’s Potential
Your mind works the same as a plant. When a plant is fed water and sunlight, it grows to its full potential, but when a plant is deprived of its food source, the plant decomposes and dies. Your mind works the same. The mind must be fed with the right nourishment in order to function properly.
The mind is special. It doesn’t need water or vegetables to unlock its full potential, it needs exercise and endorphins. Your mind is a reflection of you; it doesn’t crave food or electricity; it craves individual enjoyment and purity.
Hobbies are natural instincts. When the first scientist went to conduct an experiment and found that their
deductive thinking led to the creation of something incredible, they didn’t sit around and clog this buzzing thought with inactive action. They continued to pursue their hobby and quickly learned how to utilize it and create a suitable food source for their mind. Hobbies don’t have an age limit. Whether you acquire gymnastics at the ripe age of 6 like gymnast Simone Biles or pursue your acting career at 40 as Samuel L Jackson did; it doesn’t matter, your mind designed this hobby for you to fuel your energy and thoughts.
Hobbies are a gift to the mind to ensure it is nourished and happy. When I think of my hobby, I think of ballet. I think of every plié I have landed and the rush of adrenaline I endured when my feet met the ground. I imagine myself flying as I leap and perform my Grand Jeté. Ballet makes me happy and keeps my mind nourished, so my life isn’t deprived of what gives me light.
Everyone has a hobby that fits them. My mother loves to knit. I watch her unravel her yarn with such patience and sincerity. I watch as she repeats the same knots over and over again until she turns a ball of yarn into a wonderful beanie or scarf for me and my brother. My father thinks of a hobby as something your soul cannot live without, something that is constantly on your mind. My father loves to write, he manipulates regular words into poems that beat with the heart, into ballads that anyone can sing to. My parents have taught me that, no matter how hard life gets, your hobbies are what keep your mind grounded, as a plant with roots dug deep into the soil.
Social media is a funny thing. It doesn’t particularly nurture everyone’s mind, but for some, it might clog it. After a long, tiring day, all most people want to do is put on some comfy clothes and scroll tirelessly on social media for pure leisure and the rest their body craves.
Now social media is great, but it can become very addictive and potentially blur a person’s desire to pursue their hobby. Hobbies and social media serve a very similar purpose in this instance. They both allow a person to unwind and relax as they enjoy an activity, they can truly indulge in. But the similarities between both activities, make it hard for the mind to adjust and allow space to grow, which is why it is important to have a healthy balance of the two.
Hobbies are what fuel your mind. They are made just for you to help your mind gain the right food source in order to function to its full potential. Whether you discover your hobby at 6 or 42, your hobby is your gift to the world but most importantly it gives life to your mind, A suitable food source to help it flourish and develop. Hobbies help your plant grow so that one day it can grow into a tree that towers over you as you twirl beneath it or begin to write a new song.
