In a rare achievement, the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh’s Shravasti district has increased its coverage of iron-folic acid supplementation from 8% to 87%. This is an important development, as iron deficiency is a major public health issue in India, particularly among women and children.

Iron-folic acid supplementation is a cost-effective strategy to prevent and treat iron deficiency anemia, which can lead to serious health problems, including maternal mortality and low birth weight. According to World Health Organisation (WHO), daily iron and folic acid supplementation have been recommended as part of antenatal care. However, despite the proven benefits of iron-folic acid supplementation, coverage remains low in many parts of India.

The increase in coverage in the Shravasti district can be attributed to a combination of factors, including improved supply chain management, better community mobilization, and increased awareness among healthcare providers and the general public.

The achievement is significant not only for the Shravasti district but also for the broader public health community in India. It demonstrates that with the right strategies and investments, it is possible to significantly increase coverage of essential health services and improve health outcomes.
