Veteran actresses Tanuja and Asha Parekh have expressed their disappointment over the lack of substantial roles being written for them in the film industry. During a session of Maitri: Female First Collective, Asha Parekh pointed out the ageism in the industry and questioned why actors like Amitabh Bachchan are still offered key roles while they are being typecast in grandmother or mother roles.

Amitabh Bachchan, who is 80 years old, had five releases in 2022. In contrast, Tanuja and Asha Parekh, both in their 70s, have been struggling to find significant roles in films.

Asha Parekh also highlighted the age gap between heroes and heroines, which is still prevalent in the industry. She stated that heroes in their 50s or 55s are still being paired with actresses in their 20s, which is deemed acceptable in Bollywood.

Tanuja, on the other hand, spoke about the importance of creating one’s own rules and not conforming to societal norms. She advised women to believe in themselves and their capabilities and not to limit their potential.

The actresses’ comments shed light on the ageism and sexism that still exist in the film industry, especially for female actors. Addressing these issues and creating more opportunities for actresses of all ages to showcase their talent and skills is essential.
