Pune-based EcoKaari shows the way in upcycling single-use plastic waste to save the environment

According to a recent study, about 11 million metric tons of plastic waste and pollution enter the world’s oceans every year, affecting marine wildlife and the health of ecosystems. A 2020 report found that if no action is taken, plastic pollution is set to grow to 29 million metric tons per year in less than 20 years from now.

However, scientists in the same report said it is possible to slash 80% of that pollution by reducing the growth of virgin plastic production and switching to recyclable and eco-friendly substitutes. And recently, a group of women artisans took a step toward a better and healthy planet.

Recently an Instagram video went viral where it shows women artisans of an upcycling centre, EcoKaari, converting multi-layered plastic food wrappers into vegan and sustainable products. In that video, the women artisans are seen cutting and converting the plastic wrappers into the sustainable fabric using a handloom. They then stitch the fabric to create products like bags and planters.

The video was posted by the official Instagram account of EcoKaari (@ecokaari), where they wrote about the detrimental effects of Multi-Layered Plastics and encouraged people to “Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose and Recycle” plastic. It also urged people to donate plastic for promoting the use of sustainable products and safeguarding the environment.

This highly laudable video earned over 50 lakh views, and 2.5 likes where many Instagram users pitched in to contribute by donating plastic wrappers.
