Transform your next move from a chaotic nightmare into a manageable, stress-reduced experience with these actionable insights that prioritize your well-being over perfection.
Moving house has long been high on the list of things that stress us out as humans along with such serious things as divorce and a death in the family, so you might be thinking it’s inevitable that you will feel like a tightly woven bundle of nerves and anxiety when the time comes for you to leave your current home for pastures new. The thing is, it doesn’t have to be that way, and you can keep your stress levels relatively low if you do these seven things:
1. Start Decluttering Before You Even Think About Packing
Unless you’re dying to pay good money to move expired salad dressing and jeans you haven’t worn since 2012, do yourself a favor and purge before you pack. Go full Marie Kondo. Toss, donate, or sell anything that doesn’t serve you, spark joy, or at least fit.
Think of it this way: every item you ditch is one less thing you’ll have to haul, unwrap, and pretend you still need.
2. Label Like Your Life Depends on It
Don’t just scribble “stuff” on a box and assume Future You will figure it out. Be as specific as possible. Think “Kitchen – plates and mugs” instead of “Kitchen things.” Even better, color-code your boxes with tape or stickers. That way you’ll know exactly where things go without opening six boxes just to find a fork.
Bonus points if you number your boxes and make a cheat sheet. Nerdy? Yes. Worth it? Also yes.
3. Pack an Essentials Box (and Guard It With Your Life)
The last thing you want, when you move house, and you’re feeling exhausted from the effort of it all, is not to be able to brush your teeth because you can’t find the toothbrush, or not to be able to put on clean underwear because who knows which box it is in. Nor do you want to waste whatever energy you have left looking for that stuff, right?
That’s why you are going to want to pack an essentials box filled with all of the immediate must-haves like toiletries, chargers, snacks, and clean clothes. Bring this box with you – not in the moving truck- and life immediately post-move will be much smoother.
4. Outsource the Cleaning (Seriously, Just Do It)
You’ve packed, loaded, and possibly injured yourself in the process. The last thing you want to do is scrub the oven for your security deposit. This is where a move out cleaning service like Sparkly Maid comes in.
They’ll handle the grime while you focus on not collapsing from exhaustion. Hiring professionals isn’t lazy. It’s strategic self-preservation.
5. Get Your Utilities Set Up Before Move-In Day
You don’t want to arrive at your new place only to realize there’s no electricity, no Wi-Fi, and no hot water. That’s not a home, that’s a cave. Make a checklist of utilities—electric, gas, internet, water—and get those sorted ahead of time.
Also, let’s be real, waiting on hold with service providers is an emotional journey. Don’t leave it for moving day when your patience is already fraying.
6. Say Yes to Snacks, Hydration, and Naps
Moving is a sport. If you wouldn’t run a marathon on nothing but lukewarm coffee and stress, don’t try to move that way either. Keep water bottles and energy bars on hand. Order pizza before you realize you’re hangry. Rest when you need to.
Being fed and hydrated makes everything less rage-inducing, including tangled extension cords and flat-pack furniture instructions.
7. Accept That Something Will Go Wrong (and That’s OK)
Spoiler alert: a box will go missing, someone will drop something fragile, and your first night in the new place might involve sleeping on a pile of coats. It happens. Laugh about it later. Or now, if you can manage.
Perfection is not the goal. Sanity is.
Bottom Line?
Moving is pretty much always going to add some stress to your plate, but you can minimize the level of “oh my god what am I doing” f you get organized and get some of the above stuff in place right from the off. You owe it to yourself to do so because you don’t deserve to lose your sanity just because you’re moving home!
