KERALA SET THE HISTORY AND BECAME THE FIRST INDIAN STATE TO DECLARE THE LEAVE FOR MENSTRUAL PERIOD TO THE UNIVERSITY STUDENT
The southern state of India ‘Kerala’ has set its first step to becoming the first and only Indian state to grant leave to university students for the menstrual period, and this way once again it set a new and big example in the nation. By granting this opportunity to the students Kerala has proved that the safety and education of our girl students, and daughters matter for the nation, and by promoting this, more girl students will able to participate in the educational field without any worry or hesitation were still in some parts of India a girl student had to drop their studies and jobs in between and become the barrier between them and their dreams and goal. And this decision could also be proved as a miracle and life-changing for many girls and can also improve the literacy level of girl education in the nation.
Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan tweeted on Thursday and said: “Once again, Kerala sets a model for the nation.”
The Kerala higher education department issued an order, saying that menstruating students can now partake in their semester exams with 73 percent attendance instead of the 75 percent mandated by university rules. So that all the students can sit for the exams without facing any problems.
In one of the statements the communist leader of a state government of India added that Menstrual and maternity leaves will be granted to female students of all institutions under our Department of Higher Education, reaffirming the LDF (Left Democratic Front) Government’s commitment to realizing a gender-just society”. Following to this Mr. Vijayan also stated that this great decision has been taken also to a grant a concession of two percent in attendance is limited to the students who “miss their studies due to various health problems during their menstrual days”.
Whereas the state minister for higher education and social justice, R. Bindu, stated that the move to grant menstrual leaves was first introduced by the Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) in the state. The minister had also said that “Since such a move is expected to bring relief to a lot of menstruating students, we have decided to implement it across the state’s varsities. Necessary amendments will be made to the university rules”.
“We have to tell our girls that they can reach as high as humanly possible”.
