Stephen King discovered “The Evil Dead” at the 1982 Cannes Film Festival, and it has since become a cult classic, spawning an entire franchise of sequels.
The latest film in the series, “Evil Dead Rise” directed by Lee Cronin and starring Alyssa Sutherland and Lily Sullivan, tells the story of a mother fighting for her life when an ancient book unleashes bloodthirsty demons in her high-rise apartment. The actors reveal that the latest installment breaks through horror stereotypes. Alyssa points out that she plays a mother who turns on her kids, which she believes is unique for the genre. She hopes this portrayal will lead to depictions of more flawed female characters on-screen. The actors also discuss the challenges of filming the movie, including working with children on set and the physical toll the prosthetics and fake blood took on them.
Despite the hurdles, Lily admits she loves the horror genre as an actor, saying, “Working in horror is such an invigorating challenge, and I get to express myself from a raw primal place.” She also praises the sound designer and crew for their hard work on the film.
