YS Sharmila, the daughter of former Andhra Pradesh chief minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy, was arrested in Hyderabad on Tuesday for allegedly assaulting police officers. Sharmila has denied the charges, claiming that the officers “behaved rudely” towards her.
The incident occurred when Sharmila was leading a protest against the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) party’s decision to privatize the state-run Road Transport Corporation (RTC). According to reports, Sharmila and her supporters were attempting to march to the chief minister’s residence when they were stopped by police.
Sharmila claims that the police officers were unnecessarily aggressive and that they pushed and shoved her and her supporters. She says that she was merely trying to defend herself when she was accused of assaulting the officers.
The police have denied Sharmila’s version of events, saying that she and her supporters were trying to break through a police cordon and that they had to use force to control the situation. They claim that Sharmila hit one of the officers with her footwear, which led to her arrest.
