Grammy-Award winning artist Meghan Trainor shared her experience with postpartum post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) on Monday’s episode of Today. The 29-year-old singer opened up about the symptoms she experienced after giving birth to her child, Riley, through caesarean section. Trainor revealed that she often felt like she was still in the delivery room even after returning home from the hospital. Her feelings, which lasted for months, eventually led to her PTSD diagnosis.

Trainor’s experience is not uncommon, as approximately “9 per cent of women” experience PTSD after childbirth, according to Postpartum Support International. The condition can be caused by traumatic experiences that occur in the delivery room, including an unplanned caesarean section.

Trainor said that she was unaware that she had PTSD until she was diagnosed. She gained a better understanding of the condition and was able to “work through” it with the help of a therapist. She shared some of the insights she gained from the medical professional, including the chemical reactions that occur in the brain and the need to heal the wound.

Trainor’s new book, Dear Future Mama, was also discussed during the episode. It is a collection of personal letters she wrote to her unborn child while pregnant. Trainor hopes the book will be a resource for other mothers.
