Angela Alsobrooks, the current county executive of Prince George’s County, has announced her candidacy for the Maryland Senate seat. She is the third Democratic candidate to enter the race after Sen. Ben Cardin announced his retirement.

Alsobrooks has been serving as the county executive since 2018 and has been an advocate for improving education, affordable housing, and public safety. She has also focused on economic development and job creation in the county.

In her announcement, Alsobrooks said, “I’m running for the United States Senate to fight for every Marylander, to make sure that our communities get the investments and resources they need, to protect our families, and to create a brighter future for our children.”

Alsobrooks joins former Maryland Attorney General Doug Gansler and Rep. Anthony Brown in the Democratic primary race for the Senate seat. Gansler has already been endorsed by former Governor Martin O’Malley, while Brown has support from several labour unions.

If elected, Alsobrooks would only be the third Black woman to serve in the Senate.  “Look, I get it. There aren’t a lot of people like me in the U.S. Senate. People who live like, who think like, and who look like the people they’re supposed to represent,” Alsobrooks said in her campaign video. “I’m running for Senate to be a voice for families like the ones I grew up with here, and who I’ve worked for throughout my life.”
