In a groundbreaking move to empower women, the Government of India has announced that the Republic Day parade in 2024 will exclusively feature women participating in all activities along the prestigious Kartavya Path. This landmark decision marks the first time the government has taken such an initiative.

According to sources from the defence ministry, only female participants will take part in the march past, tableaux, and performances during the parade. The Ministry of  Defence issued a notice stating, “After extensive deliberations, it has been determined that Republic Day 2024 will witness women’s participation, including marching contingents, bands, tableaux, and performances along the Kartavya Path.”

The Defence Ministry has duly informed other ministries, including Home Affairs, Culture, and Urban Development, about this progressive step. In recent years, the defence forces and paramilitary contingents have appointed women as contingent commanders and deputy commanders, in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to enhance women’s involvement in various military roles, encompassing command opportunities and combat deployments.

During the 99th edition of PM Modi’s monthly radio programme, “Mann Ki Baat,” he emphasized the pivotal role of Indian women in driving the country’s growth. The prime minister acknowledged that women empowerment, exemplified by ‘Nari Shakti,’ is at the forefront of India’s progress.

This historic all-women Republic Day parade not only symbolizes the government’s commitment to gender equality but also serves as a powerful testament to the strength and capabilities of Indian women. It is a significant milestone in the nation’s journey towards inclusivity and gender parity, setting a precedent for greater opportunities and recognition for women in all spheres of life.
