Sharmila Tagore Returns to Bengali Cinema in Suman Ghosh’s “Puratawn”
Legendary actress Sharmila Tagore is set to make her comeback to Bengali cinema with the film “Puratawn,” directed by Suman Ghosh. The movie, produced by Tollywood actress Rituparna Sengupta’s production house, Bhavna Aaj O Kal, was unveiled on September 1 at the Hotel Hindusthan International in the presence of select media.
Sharmila Tagore, known for her iconic roles in Bengali classics like Satyajit Ray’s “Apur Sansar,” expressed her excitement about returning to mainstream Bengali cinema after 14 years. She cited her deep-rooted connection to Calcutta, where she spent her childhood in a large joint family and developed a profound love for Bengali culture, language, and films.
“Puratawn,” meaning “old” or “ancient,” explores the dynamics of a mother-daughter relationship across changing times. The film’s plot remains a well-guarded secret, but it’s described as contemporary and open to multiple interpretations.
Rituparna Sengupta, who co-wrote the story with Suman Ghosh, expressed her pride in having Sharmila Tagore join the project and emphasized the film’s universal appeal. She mentioned that “Puratawn” would challenge conventional storytelling and engage audiences worldwide.
