Exploring the Art of Tapestry Weaving!
The COVID pandemic brought in a wave of unprecedented changes, reshaping our routines and encouraging us to find solace in simple pleasures. As everything around us slowed down, many of us sought newfound hobbies, from culinary adventures to creative endeavors like painting, stitching, craft activities, and making reels with loved ones. I was no different!
It was during this time, that the urge to stand out from among the newly cropped-up bunch of creative minds hit me hard. Well, I must add that I also had to find a way to stay sane. Cooking was no longer an interesting option since thousands of culinary experts popped up at the click of the explore button on social media sites. Also, my weight only kept on increasing, adding to my woes.
In my pursuit to find something unique, I came across weaving and was amazed to find out how, just with the help of cardboard, a few nails, and yarns, we can make a piece of cloth! No fancy machines whatsoever! (Check out videos on weaving on a cardboard loom). I did my research and ended up reading about several artists and techniques. For beginners, Tapestry weaving is a technique where beautiful textile pieces can be created using frame looms. These looms, usually made of wood, come in different shapes and sizes.
Through weaving on the frame loom, anyone can make beautiful artistic creations using different types of thick and thin yarns. The beauty of weaving and fiber art is that it can be taken up by anyone and is extremely relaxing and meditative in nature. Although there are resources on the internet, it is highly recommended to enroll in a beginners’ course to make the learning process easier. With the help of a simple wooden frame loom, a variety of items can be created – wall hangings, coasters, bookmarks, friendship bands, pillow covers, table runners, and whatnot! Simple and basic techniques of weaving like tabby weaves, RYA knots, soumak stitches, sinna knots, and twill weaves can create beautiful pieces of textile art.
Once the weaving on a wooden frame loom is mastered, one can always advance to the next level of weaving on simple looms like Back Strap Loom, Rigid Heddle Loom, Inkle Loom, Scatch Tapestry Loom, and so on. The yarns that are used for weaving also come in different textures, sizes, elasticity, and material, giving a distinct creative touch to each finished piece of art. As someone who has personally delved into this art, I will highly recommend enthusiastic explorers to try Tapestry weaving and the boundless creative possibilities it has to offer.
