In a historic moment, Narges Mohammadi, a prominent Iranian women’s rights advocate and human rights activist, has been honored with the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize. The Norwegian Nobel Committee recognized her unwavering dedication to fighting for the rights of women in Iran, as well as her relentless pursuit of human rights and freedom for all individuals.

Narges Mohammadi has been a leading figure in the human rights movement in Iran, campaigning tirelessly for women’s rights and the abolition of the death penalty. Her remarkable advocacy work has come at a great personal cost, as she is currently serving multiple sentences in Tehran’s notorious Evin Prison, which collectively amount to approximately 12 years of imprisonment. Her charges include the alleged crime of spreading propaganda against the state.

Notably, Mohammadi also holds the position of deputy head at the Defenders of Human Rights Center, a non-governmental organization co-founded by Shirin Ebadi, the 2003 Nobel Peace Prize laureate.

This prestigious recognition makes Narges Mohammadi the 19th woman in history to receive the Nobel Peace Prize, with the most recent recipient prior to her being Maria Ressa of the Philippines in 2021, who shared the award with Russia’s Dmitry Muratov. The Nobel Peace Prize, valued at 11 million Swedish crowns (approximately $1 million), will be formally presented to Narges Mohammadi in Oslo on December 10th, the anniversary of the passing of Alfred Nobel, the Swedish industrialist who established the Nobel Prizes through his will in 1895.
