Laxmi Vilas Palace, situated in Gujarat and owned by the Gaekwads of Baroda, has earned the distinction of being the world’s largest private residence, dwarfing even Buckingham Palace in size. With an astounding area of 3,04,92,000 square feet, Laxmi Vilas Palace is four times larger than the iconic British royal residence. The Gaekwads of Baroda, former rulers of the region, continue to hold a place of reverence among the local population. HRH Samarjitsinh Gaekwad presently leads the erstwhile royal family and is married to Radhikaraje Gaekwad.

The opulent Laxmi Vilas Palace boasts over 170 rooms and features a rich history, having been commissioned by Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III in 1890. During its construction, the cost amounted to approximately GBP 180,000. Additionally, the palace even boasts its own golf course.

Radhikaraje Gaekwad, born on July 19, 1978, hails from the Wankaner state in Gujarat. Her father, Dr. MK Ranjitsinh Jhala, relinquished his royal title to pursue a career as an IAS officer. Radhikaraje Gaekwad is a fervent reader and writer, holding a Master’s degree in Indian History from Delhi University’s prestigious Lady Shri Ram College. Prior to her marriage to Maharaj Samarjit Singh Gaekwad in 2002, she worked as a journalist. In 2012, Samarjit Singh Gaekwad was ceremoniously handed the crown of Baroda at Laxmi Vilas Palace, cementing their place in the rich tapestry of India’s royal heritage.
