Can Screen Time Actually Help You Find Peace? What Our Poll Reveals

Mental peace is crucial for leading a fulfilling and content life. Studies have shown that having a peaceful mind boosts energy levels, helps us face challenges with confidence, reduces stress and anxiety, and leads to better decision-making. However, in today’s fast-paced and digitally driven world, how do you gain mental peace?

Recently, SheSight conducted a community poll to understand how different people find mental peace, revealing a range of perspectives.

How Do We Find Mental Peace?

The discussion began with Anamika questioning those who opted for ‘limited screen time’ in the poll, explaining her curiosity: “I’m curious because I find it very peaceful, as long as there are no interruptions.”

Neethu explained why she doesn’t limit her screen time: “When I’m stressed, watching my favorite movie scenes or listening to songs acts like a mental reset button for me. It’s really about doing what feels right for you.”

Nivedita Chitnis considers screen time a stress reliever for many today, contrasting with Anju Nandakumar’s view that, while screen time has potential long-term negative effects, moderate viewing of comedies, movies, or children’s shows can be beneficial. “Even watching wildlife shows is fun,” Anju added.

Sugandha Dutt noted that the effectiveness of screen time depends on the type of peace you’re seeking: “If you’re looking to block out the external world or quiet your inner voices, screen time can actually be helpful.”

Surangama shared her reasons for not limiting screen time: “Watching comedies or anything humorous helps me reduce negative thinking, lessen feelings of isolation, and restores a sense of normalcy.”

Dr. Aabha Pimprikar provided a cautionary note about screen time in the evenings: “My screen time is mostly in the evening. The light and images stimulate your brain—there are 24 frames per second, and our brains register each one. This often leads to overthinking for me and can disrupt the production of melatonin, affecting sleep quality.”

Anamika highlighted a variety of stress relief methods for her: She explained that when she’s stressed, she turns to her favorite songs, movies, or comedy shows. She admitted that playing video games, especially winning, really lifts her spirits, even though I t might sound childish. She also enjoys being with good friends, playing with her daughter, walking in the jungle, or just sitting and watching the mountains or the ocean, which can be incredibly soothing. However, she noted that sometimes, nothing beats the thrill of taking down a few zombies in a game.

Tishya enjoys her personal time: “For me, mental peace can come from simply enjoying a good view, eating chocolate, or listening to live music.”
