The Indian Women’s Hockey Team opened their campaign at the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham with a solid 5-0 win against Ghana on Friday
The Indian women’s hockey team opened their Commonwealth Games campaign with an outstanding 5-0 win against Ghana on Friday.
India, however, dominated the match, it was rather a lacklustre performance on their part as Ghana’s defence produced a resolute show to make their opponents frustrated. Even though there was a weak link-up between the midfield and the forward line, India’s wait to get on the scoreboard was short-lived as Gurjit Kaur scored a minute later from the first Penalty Corner of the match, helping India to a 1-0 lead. Then, India continued to maintain possession, keeping the pressure on Ghana’s defence as the first quarter came to a close.
Ultimately, the second quarter decided India’s fate as Gurjit Kaur (3rd, 39th minutes) scored a brace, while Neha Goyal (28th), Sangita Kumari (36th) and Salima Tete (56th) struck a field goal each for India, winning the first match.
At CWG 2022, the Indian women’s hockey team are clubbed in Pool A alongside hosts England, Canada, Wales and Ghana, while Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, Scotland and Kenya are in Pool B.
The Indian women’s hockey team kicked off the CWG this year with a great win, let’s see what the next match holds for our country. The Savita Punia-led squad will take on Wales in their next group tie on Saturday (July 30). The match will be held at 11.30 pm IST.
