It’s really easy to second guess yourself when a workplace culture feels unfamiliar but you have to remember that you completely deserve your spot at the table and your perspective is an incredible asset. We sometimes fall into a habit of second guessing our input before we even speak but you can just state your points directly without shrinking yourself down to make other people feel comfortable. Trust your own competence. The rest will naturally follow because genuine confidence always commands respect and people will listen to you when you speak with conviction.

Finding people who back you up is the best thing you can do for your career. No one builds a career entirely on their own so look for colleagues of any gender or background who respect your input and will advocate for you when you are in the room. Building relationships based on mutual respect and shared professional interests is so much more effective than forcing yourself to participate in awkward social events that just don’t appeal to you at all. Your peers are often fantastic mentors. They’re usually happy to share their knowledge if you just strike up a conversation about the actual work you’re all doing and ask them for their perspective on a difficult project.

Don’t let a demographic imbalance distract you from your long term goals because chances are you’ve worked way too hard to lose your momentum now! Document your wins. Speak up about your achievements even if it feels a little unnatural at first. Being in the minority can bring challenges but it also gives you opportunities to make your contributions visible and build a strong professional reputation based entirely on your work.
