Ask Mira: The Orgasm Gap Is Real. Here’s What the Numbers Mean for You.

SheSight Sexual Wellbeing Series #2

I want to start with some numbers, because these particular numbers are the kind that make you put your phone down for a second.

Heterosexual men report usually or always reaching orgasm during partnered sex: approximately 95% of the time.

Heterosexual women: approximately 65% of the time. That is a thirty-point gap. In 2024. After decades of supposed sexual liberation.

But here is the number that really tells the story: lesbian women report reaching orgasm approximately 86% of the time with a partner.

Read that again.

When the encounter does not involve a male partner working from the default cultural script, women’s orgasm rates shoot up by twenty points. Which means this is not a biological problem. The body is not the issue. The issue is knowledge, attention, and what we have all collectively been taught to treat as normal.

What Is Actually Going On Here?

A few things, all working together.

Nobody explained the basics. Research is very clear that clitoral stimulation is involved in the vast majority of female orgasms. The exact figure varies by study but consistently sits above 70%. Penetration alone produces orgasm for roughly 25% of women. Yet the cultural script for heterosexual sex, inherited from decades of film, television, and spectacularly unhelpful pornography, centres penetration as the main event and treats everything else as optional extras. This is like designing a recipe, leaving out the main ingredient, and then wondering why the dish never quite works.

We learned to perform instead of communicate. Between 50 and 80% of women have faked orgasm at some point. Many do it regularly. And honestly? Given the circumstances, it makes complete sense. If you have never been given language for what you actually need, if you are worried about a partner’s ego, if every cultural message you have ever received suggests your satisfaction is secondary: faking becomes the path of least resistance.

The problem is that it is a dead end. If your partner thinks something is working when it is not, they will keep doing the thing that is not working. You stay stuck. They stay clueless. And nothing changes.

We were not taught to ask. Communication about sexual preferences is one of the strongest predictors of sexual satisfaction for women. Not chemistry. Not compatibility. Not finding the right person. Communication. And yet most of us were never taught how to have that conversation, what words to use, how to bring it up without it feeling like a complaint or a criticism.

The Emma Thompson Rule

Emma Thompson has spoken in interviews about the importance of women refusing to accept less than they deserve, in life and in relationships, with the kind of blunt good humour that makes you want to take notes. She once described the ability to say clearly what you want as a form of self-respect, not selfishness. That reframe matters. Asking for what you need in bed is not high-maintenance. It is basic self-respect dressed in very little clothing.

What You Can Actually Do

This is the part I care most about, because information without action is just frustrating.

Start with yourself. If you are not sure what you enjoy or what reliably works for you, that is the first thing to understand. You cannot communicate clearly about something you have not explored yourself. This is not a radical suggestion. It is just practical.

Use specific, positive language with partners. “I really like it when…” is more useful than “I don’t like…” and infinitely more useful than saying nothing and hoping. Specific and positive is a complete skill set.

Choose the right moment for the conversation. Not in the middle of the moment, not immediately after, not when either of you is tired or stressed. A relaxed, neutral moment, framed as something you want to explore together rather than a list of complaints, lands completely differently.

Stop faking. I know. Easier said than done, especially if it has become a habit in an established relationship. But even a gradual shift, moving toward honest responses rather than performed ones, creates space for something real to happen.

The orgasm gap is not inevitable. It is a product of specific, fixable things. And fixing them starts with exactly this: knowing the numbers, understanding the causes, and deciding you deserve better than a 65% average.

Ask Mira’s quick tips:

  • Try the “I love it when…” approach for a week and notice what changes.
  • Remember: your partner cannot read your mind, but they can absolutely respond to clear information.
  • If faking is a long-established habit, you do not have to flip a switch overnight. Start with being more honestly present, even before you change what you say.

Still have questions? Of course you do. One article barely scratches the surface.

Maybe you are wondering whether the gap applies to you specifically. Maybe you want to know how to bring this up with a partner without it turning into a difficult conversation. Maybe you just want to understand your own body better and have no idea where to start.

All of it is welcome here. Send your question to Mira at [email protected], and it could be addressed in an upcoming edition of this series. No question is too basic, too embarrassing, or too specific. The whole point is to answer the things nobody else is answering honestly.

Ask Mira. Seriously.
