Toxic positivity refers to the mindset of individuals who dismiss or disregard negative emotions, experiences, or realities. Often conveyed through phrases like “look on the bright side” or “just be positive,” toxic positivity is meant to offer support but can actually be detrimental, especially to those already grappling with difficult emotions.
The underlying notion of toxic positivity suggests that by solely focusing on the positive aspects of life, one can evade the negative and attain happiness. However, this perspective doesn’t always hold true. In fact, when individuals are told to ignore their true feelings and put on a facade of happiness, it can exacerbate their mental health struggles, particularly in cases of depression or anxiety.
Toxic positivity also invalidates people’s emotions and experiences. When individuals are urged to “just be positive” or “look on the bright side” while facing negative emotions, they may feel that their feelings are being dismissed or that they must conceal their true emotions to be accepted. Consequently, this can lead to increased isolation and a lack of support, further deteriorating mental well-being.
Furthermore, toxic positivity can hinder healthy problem-solving. Constantly being told to “be positive” and “look on the bright side” may cause individuals to avoid confronting their challenges head-on in an attempt to maintain a facade of happiness. Ultimately, this avoidance prolongs stress as the underlying issues remain unaddressed.
Toxic positivity discourages open discussions about mental health, posing harm to those in need of support. Neglecting mental health concerns and promoting a “just be positive” mindset can minimize the importance and validity of these issues, leaving individuals feeling even more isolated and ashamed of their struggles.
