Baswaraj Shravani, a young woman at the age of 27, tragically took her own life on May 9 in Barmingam, London. Her untimely death was unveiled when her brother, Baswaraj Bharath, reached out to friends for financial assistance in bringing her body back to India.

Shravani and Bharath had journeyed to the United Kingdom on September 29, 2022, to pursue higher education, financing their dreams by mortgaging their family home with a private financier for Rs 30 lakh.

Shravani’s parents, devastated by the loss, expressed their unawareness of her distress. “Every day for the past 9 months, she would make video calls to talk to me,” shared Vijaya, her grieving mother. “We have no knowledge of her taking such a drastic step.”

While in Birmingham, Shravani took up a part-time job. On the fateful day of May 9, she engaged in a 45-minute video call with her mother, discussing family matters while they had dinner. Tragically, a few hours later, Bharath called to deliver the heartbreaking news of Shravani’s suicide.

According to Bharath, Shravani’s landlord, concerned by her unanswered calls, discovered her lifeless body hanging from the ceiling on the first floor. The police and women’s wing secretary Mary, along with NRI forum team leaders N Sridhar, P Kiran, and B Praveen, swiftly intervened, transporting the body to a local hospital for examination. With special permission from the India High Commission in the UK, her body was then sent to India in a chemical coffin.

Shravani’s father, Ramesh, works as a truck driver, while her mother, Vijaya, works as a domestic worker in Warangal. After mortgaging their residence in Warangal’s Pochamma Maidan, the family moved to a rented house in the Labour Colony of Chintal.

Bharath set up a fundraising application on Google, hoping for financial support to repatriate his sister’s body to India. The family eagerly awaited the arrival of Shravani’s remains, expected on Wednesday evening.

While rumors circulate about Shravani’s suicide being linked to a failed romantic relationship, her uncle Narsingh and other relatives firmly deny any such affair. Instead, they highlight her selflessness, noting that she had lent Rs 4 lakh to a schoolmate for their higher studies, which remained unpaid, causing her distress in the face of mounting financial difficulties.

BRS MLC Baswaraj Saraiah visited Warangal to offer his condolences to his cousin brother before departing for Hyderabad, leaving behind a grieving family grappling with the devastating loss of Baswaraj Shravani.
