Dr. Rohini Godbole: The Physicist Who Split Atoms—and Barriers

In the world of particle physics, where equations often speak louder than words, Dr. Rohini Madhusudan Godbole (1952–2024) made sure her voice—and the voices of countless women—were heard. A pioneering Indian theoretical physicist, she not only reshaped our understanding of the universe’s fundamental forces but also redefined who gets to participate in that discovery.

Early Life and Education

Born on 12 November 1952 in Pune, Maharashtra, Rohini Godbole’s academic brilliance was evident from the start. She earned her bachelor’s degree in physics, mathematics, and statistics from Sir Parshurambhau College, University of Pune. She then pursued her master’s in physics at IIT Bombay, where she graduated with a silver medal.

Her intellectual journey took her to the State University of New York at Stony Brook, where she completed her PhD in theoretical particle physics in 1979. Her doctoral advisor, Jack Smith, was a student of Nobel Laureate Peter Higgs—linking her academic lineage to one of the most celebrated names in physics.

Scientific Contributions

Dr. Godbole’s research spanned quantum chromodynamics, electroweak theory, supersymmetry, and dark matter. She was best known for her work on the Drees–Godbole Effect, which provided key insights into the hadronic structure of high-energy photons. This work has had lasting implications for the design of next-generation electron-positron colliders.

She authored over 150 research papers, many of which are widely cited in the field. Her expertise made her a sought-after adviser for global projects, including CERN and the International Linear Collider. She was a member of the International Detector Advisory Group (IDAG) and contributed to top and Higgs physics, helping shape India’s role in international particle physics collaborations.

Academic Career

Dr. Godbole began her career at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) in Mumbai as a visiting fellow in 1979. She later taught at the University of Bombay from 1982 to 1995. In 1995, she joined the Centre for High Energy Physics at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, where she became a full professor in 1998. After her retirement in 2021, she continued as an honorary professor.

Throughout her career, she mentored over 14 PhD students, 3 MPhil students, and 5 Master’s students, many of whom now hold faculty positions at leading institutions worldwide.

Champion of Inclusion

While her scientific achievements were groundbreaking, Dr. Godbole’s legacy is equally defined by her tireless advocacy for gender equity in science. She was the founding Chair of the Women in Science panel at the Indian Academy of Sciences, where she led efforts to address systemic barriers faced by women in STEM.

She co-edited the landmark books Lilavati’s Daughters and The Girl’s Guide to a Life in Science, which chronicled the lives and struggles of Indian women scientists. These works became essential reading for young women aspiring to enter scientific fields.

Her advocacy extended to policy. As chair of a committee for India’s Science, Technology, and Innovation Policy (STIP-2020), she ensured that equity and inclusivity (E&I) were central to the national science agenda. “I’m most happy about the recommendation on E&I being included in the policy,” she said. “The most significant part is the focus on equity—not just equality.”

In 2024, she helped launch the SWATI Portal, a national platform to connect and empower women scientists across India.

Final Years and Legacy

Dr. Godbole continued publishing and mentoring until her final months. Her last doctoral student submitted their thesis in August 2024, just weeks before her passing. She died peacefully on 25 October 2024 in Bangalore, following a short illness, at the age of 71.

Tributes poured in from across the scientific community. Colleagues described her as a “brilliant researcher,” “a leader,” and “a flag-bearer for women in science.” Her students remembered her as a mentor who inspired them to pursue research with courage and conviction.
