French junior social affairs minister Marlene Schiappa is facing backlash from her own party for posing in a white dress for the cover of Playboy. The controversy comes at a time of social unrest in France as the government is facing criticism over pension reforms.

Despite the criticism, Schiappa defended herself on Twitter saying, “Defending the right of women to have control of their bodies, that’s everywhere and all the time. In France, women are free. With all due respect to the detractors and hypocrites.”

The Playboy issue will feature a 12-page interview with Schiappa where she discusses women’s and LGBT rights. Schiappa is known for introducing legislation that outlaws catcalling and street harassment.

Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne reportedly expressed her displeasure with the interview, calling it “not at all appropriate, all the more so in the current period.” The leader of the far-left opposition party also criticized the decision.

The Playboy issue is set to release on April 8th.
