Balamani Amma or famously known as “amma” (mother) and “muthassi” (grandmother) of Malayalam poetry, is one of the prolific poetesses of her time. Despite getting no formal education, Amma with the influence of her uncle, developed an interest in literature. She published more than 20 anthologies of poems along with other translation works. Some of her best works include Amma, Mazhuvinte Katha (The Story of the Axe), and Sandhya.

Amma was conferred with various awards and honours; such as the Padma Bhushan, India’s third highest civilian honour, in 1987; the Sahitya Akademi Award for Muthassi in 1965; the Saraswati Samman for Nivedyam in 1995, among others.

Her daughter, well-known author Kamala Das followed Amma’s footsteps and became one of the most celebrated women authors of Indian literature. Her autobiography, Ente Katha (My story) is regarded as one of the best works of the 20th century. Later, in 1984 she was shortlisted for the Nobel Prize in Literature.
