Few things are as important in the running of your business as getting paid. And when your customers are trying to channel their hard-earned money to buy your product or use your services, you need to ensure that they can do so as easily as possible. More and more payment methods have opened up over the last few years and you need to ensure that you are on top of all of them. If customers have difficulty paying you, they are likely to become frustrated and head over to your competitors.

So, here we are going to talk about some of the main ways that you can make your payment system that little bit better and more efficient. We are going to approach this subject from a variety of different angles, so you can identify some areas which you are already on top of, as well as others which you still need to implement in your own business.

Offer a Number of Different Payment Methods

Customers prefer to have a choice of payment methods so that they can pick whichever one is easiest for them such as contactless payment technology. This doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to offer all of the ones which are currently available as this may not be best for your business. It is worth doing some customer analysis to find out how your customers prefer to pay and offering these methods as standard. Debit and credit card are well-established – and PayPal is also increasingly popular. There is also a growing trend towards cryptocurrencies if you are hoping to introduce this now or in the near future. Direct debit should also be an option if you are expecting to receive regular payments from your clients.

Allow Payments without an Account

With so many usernames and passwords, some people simply may not want to open up an account with you to have to pay for their goods or services. However, you can obviously still highlight the benefits of doing so – perhaps you could offer a discount code or some other type of incentive to encourage customers to create an account. One of the main reasons why they are reluctant to set up an account is because they are expecting to be bombarded with promotional emails, but you can reassure them by offering an opt-out box to tick. If you are going to encourage people to set up an account, try to make this process as streamlined as possible without forcing them to fill in endless boxes with information that you don’t really need to know.

Ensure Easy Site Navigation

Sometimes, customers will want to put something in their basket and go back to your site to browse through other sections. You should ensure that they can return easily to the payment screen when they would like to. An easy way of doing this is by keeping the basket clearly on display at the side of the screen no matter which pages they click on.
