IBA investigates Anjani, a Nepalese boxer of Indian origin, at World Boxing C’ships
The Indian Boxing Association (IBA) has launched an investigation into the case of Anjani, a boxer from Nepal who participated in the recently concluded Youth World Boxing Championships held in Poland. Anjani’s participation in the tournament has raised questions regarding his eligibility to represent Nepal, as he is believed to be an Indian citizen.
The IBA has requested the Boxing Federation of India (BFI) to provide them with Anjani’s documents, including his passport and birth certificate, to verify his nationality. The BFI has reportedly informed the IBA that Anjani’s documents were in order and that he had been cleared to participate in the tournament by the Nepal Boxing Association.
Anjani, who won his first-round bout against an Irish boxer, was knocked out in the second round by a Russian boxer. His participation in the tournament has sparked a debate among boxing officials and fans, with some questioning the credibility of his selection to represent Nepal.
Anjani, who hails from the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, has been training in Nepal for the past few years. He has been associated with the Nepal Army Sports Club and has also represented Nepal in the South Asian Games held in 2019.
The controversy surrounding Anjani’s participation in the tournament highlights the need for stricter eligibility criteria for international sporting events. It also raises questions about the responsibility of national sporting associations in verifying the eligibility of their athletes.
