Indian Women’s Sepaktakraw Team Secures Historic Bronze at Asian Games
In a remarkable display of determination, the Indian women’s Sepaktakraw team has secured its first-ever bronze medal in the sport at the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China. The team, consisting of Priya Devi Elangbam, Bi Devi Elangbam, Khushboo, Chaoba Devi Oinam, and Maipak Devi Ayekpam, demonstrated exceptional spirit throughout the competition.
Although they faced a formidable opponent in Thailand in the regu semifinal, the Indian team put up a valiant fight. Ultimately, Thailand emerged victorious with a straight-set win of 21-10, 21-13 in a match that lasted 30 minutes. This historic bronze medal marks only the second time that India has earned a medal in Sepaktakraw.
This achievement adds to India’s growing medal tally, bringing it to a total of 89 medals and solidifying its fourth-place position in the overall medal standings at the Asian Games. Notably, this is India’s first medal in the women’s regu category, making it a historic moment for Indian Sepaktakraw.
Sepaktakraw, often described as “kick the rattan ball,” is a sport with limited recognition in India.
