A report by Booking.com and McKinsey & Company titled ‘How India Travels’ predicts that Indian travelers will spend a staggering $410 billion by 2030, making India the fourth largest global spender. This reflects a 173% increase compared to 2019 when Indian travelers spent $150 billion, ranking India as the sixth largest spender globally.

In 2022, India led the recovery in tourism expenditure, reaching 78% of 2019 levels, while Asia stood at 52%. The report forecasts a significant rise in aggregate trips from 2.3 billion in 2019 to an impressive 5 billion by 2030.

Indian travelers exhibit spontaneity in trip planning, with an average window of just 29 days. They prioritize culinary convenience, with over 80% valuing restaurant and room service options during their stay. Demand for alternative accommodations like hostels, campsites, and vacation rentals is also on the rise.

Notably, lesser-known destinations like Varanasi, Gurugram, and Coimbatore are gaining popularity. Additionally, off-beat locations such as Panchgani, Madikeri, and Mount Abu are witnessing increased demand in 2023. Indian travelers are also looking overseas, with new destinations in Vietnam, Indonesia, and Nepal rising in popularity.

Travel inspirations for Indians come from TV shows and Indian cinema, with 54% indicating a preference for destinations featured in media. Mega events like sporting tournaments, diplomatic meetings, and music concerts further encourage travel. Social media plays a significant role, with 91% of Indian travelers finding inspiration on YouTube and 85% on Instagram. The future of Indian travel looks promising, with opportunities to offer attractive, personalized, and sustainable experiences to meet travelers’ evolving preferences.
