She pointed out that even when women do enter these fields, they often face discrimination and a lack of support. As a result, many talented women leave these industries, creating a loss of potential innovation and progress.

“No one should be pushed out of a field because of their gender or ethnicity,” Nooyi said. “Let us not create a society where we push out some of the best talents artificially.” Nooyi’s message is particularly relevant today, as the COVID-19 pandemic has disproportionately affected women’s employment. According to a report by McKinsey & Company, women are more likely to work in industries that have been hardest hit by the pandemic, such as hospitality and retail.
