Can there be a world where young people are leading the effort to save the planet? Well yes, Maya Penn is helping to create this future with her creativity, determination, and deep passion for the environment. Born on February 10, 2000, in Atlanta, Georgia, Maya has already made a significant impact at just 23 years old. She is not only an entrepreneur and environmental activist but also a role model for young people who want to change the world.

Maya’s journey began with an insatiable curiosity about the world around her. While other children might have been absorbed in cartoons, Maya was already imagining ways to improve the Earth. Her parents played a crucial role in fostering this curiosity, introducing her to nature, the environment, and the interconnectedness of life through books, documentaries, and time spent outdoors. This early exposure laid the foundation for Maya’s future endeavors and her holistic approach to environmental activism.

Her education was far from traditional. Maya was homeschooled, which gave her the flexibility to dive deeply into subjects she was passionate about. Reflecting on her unique education, Maya has said, “Being homeschooled allowed me to take the time to explore what I was passionate about, to immerse myself in creativity and learn about the world in ways that weren’t restricted.” This educational freedom would prove instrumental in shaping Maya’s multifaceted approach to environmental advocacy.

At the age of just 8, Maya took her first major step toward making a difference by launching her own business. In 2008, she founded Maya’s Ideas, an eco-friendly fashion brand with a mission to create beautiful, sustainable clothing. Maya’s business is rooted in the belief that fashion can be kind to the planet, and she uses materials that reflect this philosophy, such as organic fabrics and recycled items. Instead of allowing old clothes and fabrics to end up in landfills, Maya breathes new life into them by transforming them into stylish, eco-conscious designs. “I wanted to create something that not only made people feel good when they wore it but also made them feel good knowing it wasn’t harming the planet,” Maya explains. For her, fashion isn’t just about looking good; it’s about making a positive impact on the environment.

Maya is also a gifted animator who uses her creative storytelling to raise awareness about environmental issues. Her animated series, “The Pollinators,” focuses on the importance of bees and other small creatures that play a crucial role in our ecosystem. Through her work, Maya highlights how these tiny creatures contribute to the health of the planet and why we should protect them. In 2022, she completed her first animated film, “Asali: Power of The Pollinators,” which combines adventure with lessons about nature. When discussing the power of storytelling, Maya said, “Art can be a powerful way to make people care. When you tell a story, it resonates with people on a deeper level, and that’s what I try to do with my animation and my films.”

Maya has used her voice on a global stage to create a change by raising awareness. She has given three TED Talks, which are known for spreading powerful ideas to a wide audience. In one of her TED Talks, Maya expressed the importance of young people getting involved early, saying, “You’re never too young to change the world. People need to hear that your voice matters, and when you take action, others will follow.”

Maya doesn’t just speak about making the world better—she takes action through her nonprofit, Maya’s Ideas 4 The Planet. This organization focuses on solving environmental challenges. Through her charity, Maya has been able to provide resources and education on sustainability, empowering others to make eco-friendly choices in their own lives. In addition, Maya supports organizations like One Billion Rising and Girls, Inc., which aim to empower women and girls.

Importantly, Maya believes that environmental justice and social justice are interconnected, especially for communities of color that are more likely to face environmental hazards like pollution. “When we protect the planet,” Maya says, “we’re also protecting the communities that suffer the most from environmental harm. We can’t have one without the other.” For her, standing up for the environment is also standing up for equality and fairness, demonstrating the holistic nature of her activism.

Maya’s remarkable work has caught the attention of many. She has been featured in magazines and on television and even made it onto Oprah’s list of 100 visionaries and influential leaders. In 2016, she was named to Oprah’s SuperSoul 100, a list that recognizes individuals making a significant positive impact globally. She has also served as a guest editor for Eluxe Magazine, where she focused on sustainability and the role of Generation Z in creating positive change.

Her journey reminds us that protecting the planet and standing up for justice are closely connected. By embracing creativity, taking action, and caring for the environment, we can all play a part in building a better future. Maya Penn’s multifaceted approach to environmental activism—through fashion, animation, public speaking, and community action—demonstrates that there are many paths to making a positive impact on the world.
