Millie Bobby Brown Declares Enough is Enough: ‘This is Bullying, Not Journalism’

Millie Bobby Brown, known for her role in Stranger Things, has spoken out against recent press articles that criticized her appearance, stating, “This isn’t journalism; this is bullying.” The 21-year-old actress shared her thoughts in a three-minute video on Instagram, where she called out specific headlines and named the reporters responsible for them.
In the video, Brown discussed how she has been on a promotional tour for her new film The Electric State, along with appearances at various award shows, including the SAG and Brit awards. She expressed her frustration, saying, “I grew up in front of the world, and for some reason people can’t seem to grow up with me.” She noted that instead of evolving alongside her, some critics seem to expect her to remain “frozen in time,” as she did during the first season of Stranger Things. Because she doesn’t look the same as she did years ago, she feels targeted.
Brown took issue with articles that critique her hair, face, body, and sense of style, some of which suggested that she appears older than her actual age. She remarked, “The fact that adult writers are spending their time dissecting my face, my body, my choices, is disturbing.” To add to her dismay, she pointed out that some of the articles were penned by women, saying, “That some of these articles are written by women makes it even worse.”
Since her early days in the spotlight, starting with her appearances at just nine years old in Once Upon a Time in Wonderland and Intruders, Brown has grown up publicly. Her breakout role as Eleven in Stranger Things in 2016 brought her international fame and several award nominations.
Concluding her video, Brown asserted, “I will not be shamed for how I look, how I dress, or how I present myself.” She called for a collective improvement in how society treats young women, saying, “Let’s do better, not just for me but for every young girl who deserves to grow up without the fear of being torn apart for simply existing.”
Her response has resonated with many, including fellow actors like Sarah Jessica Parker, who expressed her pride for Brown. Louis Partridge, her co-star from Enola Holmes, praised her for handling the situation with “grace.” Mckenna Grace, another young actress, reinforced Brown’s message, stating, “No young woman or person deserves to feel pressure or cruelty for simply existing. You are so well spoken and so beautiful.”
