Mrs. Bector: Ice Cream Mogul, Overcame Threats, Built Empire

Rajni Bector, the founder of Mrs. Bector’s Food Specialties Limited, has a remarkable entrepreneurial journey that began with an in-house bakery and ice-cream shop. Despite facing challenges, including death threats to her husband and an abduction attempt on her son, Rajni’s perseverance and dedication have led to the success of her business empire.

Born in Karachi in 1940, Rajni shifted to Delhi after the partition and later got married at the age of 17 to Dharamvir Bector, a businessman from Ludhiana. While raising her three sons, Rajni pursued her passion for baking and started experimenting with ice creams, cookies, and salads, inviting friends and family to taste her creations.

Encouraged by influential figures like Brijmohan Munjal and Dr. SC Jain, Rajni ventured into the business world by setting up a small cream unit in her backyard with an initial investment of Rs. 20,000. Her husband, Dharamvir, played a crucial role in branding their products, leading to the birth of ‘Cremica’.

In 1996, Rajni’s partnership with McDonald’s proved to be a game-changer, significantly increasing her company’s revenue. To meet the growing demand, she expanded her manufacturing units across the country and launched an IPO in 2020.

Despite her success, Rajni faced adversity, particularly during the anti-Sikh riots of 1984, when her family received death threats and her son was nearly abducted. However, these challenges only strengthened Rajni’s resolve to succeed.

Today, Mrs. Bector’s Food Specialties Limited is a renowned name in the FMCG sector, with a market capitalization of over Rs. 6,600 crores. Rajni’s entrepreneurial journey serves as an inspiration to aspiring entrepreneurs, proving that with determination and hard work, one can overcome any obstacle and achieve great success.
