The BRICS 2024 report highlights the imperative of women’s empowerment in technology and entrepreneurship, acknowledging achievements while pinpointing areas for advancement.

Expanded to include new members in 2023, BRICS now represents over 47% of the world’s population and 36% of the global GDP, signifying its growing diversity and influence.

The report, titled “New Era of BRICS – Horizons in Tech and Business for Women Empowerment,” delves into the evolving landscape of technology and entrepreneurship for women across BRICS nations. It acknowledges progress made but also underscores persistent challenges faced by women in stem sectors.

In India, women significantly contribute to STEM fields, yet hurdles persist in accessing leadership roles and venture capital funding, with only 0.3% of startup funding directed towards them.

Brazil boasts 30% of businesses led or created by women entrepreneurs, but a mere 9.8% of tech startups are founded by women. Similarly, Russia sees notable participation at 40%, while China witnesses 45% female science workers. In South Africa, women hold 28% of tech workforce leadership roles, with Iran experiencing an increase from 10.5% in 1990 to 16.8% in 2020. However, women’s contribution across BRICS nations lags behind.

The report accentuates India’s role in advancing gender equality initiatives within the BRICS framework. Ruby Sinha, President of BRICS CCI WE, stresses the need to prioritize gender equality initiatives to foster an inclusive and supportive environment for women in business.

Major highlights underscore the pivotal role of women’s empowerment in achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and driving economic and social growth. BRICS nations reaffirm their commitment to gender equality initiatives, recognizing the significance of women’s technological empowerment and entrepreneurship.

Advocating for collective efforts to address persistent gender gaps and barriers, the report emphasizes targeted support for women entrepreneurs, diversity promotion, and STEM education among females.
