In recent years, veganism has surged in popularity, drawing attention not only for its ethical and environmental implications but also for its potential health benefits. For women, in particular, adopting a vegan lifestyle can bring about significant changes, both positive and negative, across various facets of their lives. From improved physical health to potential financial considerations and shifts in mental well-being, the decision to go vegan can be a transformative journey.  Let’s dive into the heart of this journey, exploring the highs and lows through the eyes of real women who have embarked on this transformative path.

Nourishing body and soul: The health odyssey

Embracing a vegan diet often means consuming more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains while cutting out animal products. Picture this: Vibrant salads bursting with color, hearty bean stews simmering on the stove, and the crisp crunch of fresh fruits; now this shift can lead to a myriad of health benefits for women. A study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association found that individuals following a vegan diet tend to have lower risks of heart disease, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, and certain cancers. For women, these benefits can be particularly significant, as heart disease remains the leading cause of death globally.

Dietician Sowndarya Ravishankar notes, “A well-planned vegan diet can be incredibly nutritious, rich in fiber, vitamins, and antioxidants, which are crucial for women’s health, including hormonal balance and reproductive health.”

Moreover, many women report improvements in skin health, digestion, and overall energy levels after transitioning to a vegan lifestyle. The absence of certain animal-derived hormones and antibiotics found in meat and dairy products can also contribute to hormonal balance for some women, she added.

However, there are potential downsides to consider as well. Women may face challenges in meeting their nutritional needs, particularly regarding essential nutrients like vitamin B12, iron, calcium, omega-3 fatty acids, and protein. Without careful planning, deficiencies in these nutrients can arise, leading to issues such as fatigue, hair loss, and compromised immune function.

Physical trainer Anto Philip says, “I have seen women struggle with maintaining muscle mass and strength when switching to a vegan diet, especially if they’re not mindful of their protein intake. It’s crucial to prioritise plant-based protein sources and possibly supplement with protein powders if needed.”

Pennywise or pound foolish: Navigating the financial maze

Finding the silver lining:

On the financial front, adopting a vegan diet can have both positive and negative implications. While some perceive veganism as an expensive lifestyle choice, it can actually lead to savings in certain areas. By focusing on whole foods like grains, legumes, fruits, and vegetables, women can reduce their grocery bills compared to purchasing meat, dairy, and processed foods.

“It’s surprising how much money I’ve saved since going vegan,” says Payel Sen a thrifty vegan guru. “I used to spend a lot on meat and cheese, but now I find that buying plant-based ingredients in bulk is much more affordable. Indians have so many recipes that we can make with the vegetables. I feel the basic Indian diet – Daal Chawal and Sabzi is the best example of a good vegan diet. You can choose your plant-based protein of choice for extra oomph”

There are instances where vegan alternatives and specialty products can be costly, potentially offsetting the savings from eliminating animal products. “Finding affordable vegan options can be tough, especially in areas with limited access to fresh produce or specialty store. Llet’s not sugarcoat it as there are times when veganism and being vegetarian can put a strain on our wallets” remarks Priya Malvi, a budget-conscious vegetarian. “I’ve had to get creative with meal planning to keep costs down.”

Soul Food: Nurturing Mental Well-being

Basking in the Sunshine:

Beyond the realm of physical health lies a sanctuary for our souls. For many women, embracing veganism isn’t just about what we eat—it’s about aligning our values with our actions, finding peace in knowing that every meal is a small step towards a kinder world. Many individuals report feeling a sense of alignment with their values, knowing that their dietary choices contribute to animal welfare and environmental sustainability.

“Going vegan has been incredibly empowering for me and choosing veganism has been a journey of self-discovery.” shares Maya, who transitioned to veganism two years ago. “Knowing that I’m living in alignment with my values gives me a sense of purpose and fulfillment.”

Yet, amidst the sea of positivity, there are moments of doubt and insecurity. Navigating social situations can be a minefield, with raised eyebrows and well-meaning questions testing our resolve. The emotional journey of transitioning to veganism isn’t always smooth sailing. Women may encounter social challenges, facing skepticism or criticism from friends, family, or society at large. Dining out or attending social gatherings can become a source of stress as vegan options may be limited or met with resistance.

“I have faced a lot of judgment and pushback from friends and family since going vegan,” says Revathy. “It can be isolating at times, and I’ve had to develop a thicker skin to navigate those conversations. There have been times when I thought of going back to being non-vegetarian as whenever, wherever I went, I had to nit-pick from the menu. Yet I’ve learned to stay true to myself and find strength in my convictions,” she added.

Weighty issue of finding balance in body image

For many women, the decision to go vegan is intertwined with a desire for a healthier lifestyle, often leading to transformative changes in weight and body image. Shedding pounds, gaining energy, and feeling more confident in our skin—these are the victories we celebrate.

“I feel like a whole new person since going vegan,” exclaims Maggi, her eyes sparkling with newfound confidence. Maggi switched to being vegan from a non-vegetarian in 2019 and she says there is no looking back.  “I have lost weight, gained muscle, and most importantly, I feel happier and healthier than ever before.”

But let’s not overlook the challenges that come with the territory. From navigating cravings to finding balance in our eating habits, the journey to a healthy body image isn’t always smooth sailing.

Despite the potential for weight loss, some women may find it challenging to maintain or achieve their desired weight on a vegan diet. Calorie-dense vegan foods like nuts, seeds, and avocados can contribute to weight gain if not consumed mindfully. Additionally, reliance on processed vegan alternatives high in sugar and refined carbohydrates can hinder weight loss efforts.

“I initially gained weight when I went vegan because I was indulging in a lot of processed vegan junk food,” confesses Annu Hasna. “It took some trial and error to find a balance and focus on whole foods.”

Embracing the journey, one step at a time

The decision to go vegan is like a thread woven with passion, purpose, and perseverance. It’s not just about what we eat but the values we uphold, the connections we forge, and the stories we share along the way. It is also a complex interplay of health considerations, financial implications, and emotional well-being.  While the potential benefits are vast, ranging from improved physical health to a sense of purpose and alignment with values, it’s essential to approach this dietary shift with mindfulness and awareness of potential challenges.

As a physical trainer wishing anonymity aptly summarises, “Veganism can be incredibly beneficial for women’s health, but it’s not a one-size-fits-all solution. It’s crucial to prioritise nutrient-dense foods, stay informed about nutritional needs, and listen to your body throughout the journey.”

Ultimately, whether embarking on the vegan path for health, ethical, or environmental reasons, women can find empowerment and fulfillment in aligning their dietary choices with their values while navigating the joys and challenges that come with embracing a plant-based lifestyle.
