Priyanka Chopra Jonas, the popular Indian actor, has opened up about her decision to move to Hollywood in a recent interview on the comedy podcast “Armchair Expert”. The 40-year-old actor revealed that she was pushed into a corner in the Hindi film industry, with people not casting her for unknown reasons, which led her to become tired of the industry politics and seek a break.

She explained that she had always been in the zone of being a “serious actor” and not interested in “mega movies” when her current manager, Anjula Acharia, called her in 2011 while she was on the set of Vishal Bhardwaj’s “7 Khoon Maaf” in Coorg. Acharia suggested that Chopra try music, and after recording a demo, Chopra was signed by the American record label Interscope Records. She became a sensation through music videos “In My City” and “Exotic.” Eventually, she made her Hollywood debut through ABC’s thriller drama series “Quantico” in 2015, becoming the first South Asian actor to headline an American network drama series.

Chopra spoke about how the music industry allowed her to explore another part of the world and not crave the movies she didn’t want to do, which would require her to schmooze certain clubs and cliques of people. Instead, she was able to work with incredible artists such as Pitbull, and Will. I.Am, Pharrell, Mathew Koma, and even had dinner with Bruce Springsteen and his wife and met Jay-Z and Beyonce.

However, she soon realized that acting was her true calling, and Interscope Records founder Jimmy Iovine helped her find representation in acting. She made her Hollywood film debut in 2017’s “Baywatch” and most recently starred in “The Matrix: Resurrections”. She will next be seen in the Prime Video series “Citadel”, opposite Richard Madden of “Game of Thrones” fame.
