Resilient 90-Year-Old Battles Osteoporosis to Feed 120 Dogs Daily

Kanak Saxena, a spirited 90-year-old, defies her osteoporosis, fractures, and major surgeries to rise at 4.30 am daily. However, her early mornings are not spent cooking for her family but for 120 fortunate dogs in Ghaziabad. Her unwavering dedication to these furry companions is a testament to the power of love and compassion, even in the face of physical challenges.

Kanak’s journey into dog rescue began when her granddaughter, Sana, brought home a dog named Coco. Initially indifferent to dogs, Kanak’s heart gradually warmed to Coco, leading to a profound transformation. She began to devote her days to caring for him, playing with him, and showering him with affection. When Sana started helping street dogs, Kanak couldn’t resist joining in. Her physical limitations prevented her from directly feeding them, so she found solace in cooking meals for these needy stray animals.

The pandemic’s onset and the loss of a beloved dog named Bholu near their home triggered a significant change in their lives. Sana and her father decided to take on the responsibility of ensuring these street dogs did not go hungry during these trying times. What started as a modest effort to feed 10–20 dogs has now grown into a daily commitment to care for 120 dogs, including their vaccinations, medications, and shelter.

Kanak’s culinary skills play a vital role in this endeavor. She insists on preparing fresh food for the dogs, and the family uses about 10 kg of rice daily, along with chicken and various combinations that Kanak experiments with. This costs them nearly Rs 350 per dog per month, totaling Rs 42,000 for 120 dogs. To support this noble cause, they raise funds.

Sana ensures that the dogs are fed 365 days a year, regardless of the circumstances. Even in the face of personal tragedy, like the loss of her father to COVID-19, Sana and her mother persevere in their mission to feed and care for these dogs.

This compassionate act has not only grown to encompass vaccinations, temporary shelters, and rescue operations but also inspired Sana to educate others about dogs and encourage adoptions through her Instagram page, “Paws in Puddle.”
