The traditionally male-dominated manufacturing sector in India is actively working to enhance diversity and inclusion in apprenticeships. According to recent data, the demand for female apprentices has increased by an impressive threefold (equivalent to 500%) in the first quarter of FY24 compared to Q4FY23.

This trend is noticeable in various regions, including Southern states like Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Telangana, Western states like Maharashtra (particularly in Aurangabad and Pune), and Northern states like Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Haryana.

Employers across the manufacturing sector are now promoting gender neutrality in apprentice engagement, with 51% actively fostering equal opportunities for both genders.

What sets the apprenticeship domain apart from traditional employment practices is the commendable compensation parity between male and female apprentices. This approach aligns with the industry’s commitment to creating an inclusive environment, promoting gender equality, and empowering women while fostering talent creation.

Key sectors driving this positive change are Automobiles/Auto Components and Electronic/Technology Products, where compensation disparities do not exist.

Moreover, sectors such as Pharmaceuticals, Telecom, and White Goods are projected to follow this trend in the coming months. The demand for women apprentices extends to roles like Machine Operations, particularly Assembly Line Operations, highlighting a growing emphasis on female apprenticeships in the traditionally male-dominated manufacturing sector.

This trend indicates the manufacturing industry’s commitment to enhancing diversity hiring and fostering gender parity. This increase in gender diversity is not only benefiting the sector but also contributing to the socioeconomic upliftment of women, especially those from rural communities. These apprenticeship programs are not only imparting technical skills but also essential soft skills, contributing to the overall growth and success of the manufacturing sector.
