Transform potential conflicts into opportunities for deeper connection with your adolescent.
It’s an almost universal parental experience. You’re living life with your teenager, getting used to one change before suddenly, another one comes along. Whether it’s blue hair, a lip piercing, or even some pretty out-there fashion choices, your first reaction might be ot protest, but is that really the right move? Here, we’re going to look at how you can navigate the issue a little more deftly.
Hold Your Judgments
The idea that teenage fashion is all about rebelling against parents is usually way off the mark, and places you and your feelings at the center of what should be a conversation about your teen. In most cases, it’s about self-discovery or reflecting on themselves, whether it’s inspired by a musician, finding a visual identity, or even coming out of their shell. Try to listen to their reasons behind their choices with open ears. You might not agree with every choice, but it’s more likely to help you build a relationship based on trust and communication. Which, in turn, is more likely to make them share in the future, too.
Fashion And The Body
A new sense of style can take some getting used to, especially for parents of teens growing into their bodies, and especially for growing young women. How your kid dresses can become a source of tension if you’re worried about modesty while they’re trying to crave autonomy. Focusing the conversation on propriety can be stifling, but teaching them about empowerment, self-respect, and body positivity can help them be much more mindful of their choices. Shopping together can help you provide a measure of restraint, even without having to actively voice disapproval.
A New Hair Color
Hari dye is one of the lowest-risk and most reversible ways that teenagers can express their individuality. In most cases, the only real barrier is that they may not fit with school dress codes. However, expectations should be clarified. For instance, bleach can have a much longer-lasting effect compared to temporary dies, and dyes require upkeep. Allowing your teen to experiment with their hair gives them some control over something harmless while also fostering some responsibility.
The Big Talk: Piercings
A lot of teenagers are into piercings these days. In most places, even if teenagers under 18 are legally allowed to get a piercing, they need parental consent. At the end of the day, it is your right to say “no,” but that might not always be the most productive conversation. If your teen is thinking about getting a conch piercing, for instance, you can explore styles with them and why they might want it. If you do agree, it’s vital to insist on using a licensed, experienced piercer who uses sterile, single-use needles, too.
Setting Your Boundaries
Although most of the tips above suggest letting your teenager explore their autonomy, when it comes to any potentially unsafe forms of self-expression, or those that might affect their opportunities, like face piercings or visible tattoos, setting healthy boundaries can be important. Fair, clear compromises tend to work better than flat-out rejection, however. Regardless, staying calm and consistent is important and more likely to make them respect your limits rather than feel like they’re being unfairly stifled.
Agreement might not always be possible, but you should always at least have a dialogue about your teenager if they’re looking to change anything about their self-expression. Simply stifling the conversation is rarely the correct answer for your relationship in the long run.
